Ute Canopy and Tray Accessories
What should you fit first? Work in this order: security, then access, then capacity, then comfort. That means an alarm and upgraded locks first (from $40.50), then drawers and a suspended shelf so you stop climbing into the canopy, then external carriers, then the comfort items. A complete fit-out runs roughly $1,500–$3,000 and is what turns an empty alloy box into a working vehicle.
Most people buy accessories in the order they notice the problem — then find the shelf has to come out to fit the drawers. Full fit-out sequence and payload figures: the accessories guide.

Fit-out order and what each stage costs
| Stage | What you fit | Why it goes here | Spend |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Security | Upgraded locks, canopy alarm | Everything you fit afterwards is worth stealing. | $60–$250 |
| 2. Access | Drawers, shelves, ladder, roof rack | These define the internal geometry. Everything else fits around them. | $600–$1,400 |
| 3. Capacity | Jerry cans, spare wheel, gas bottles, pantry slides | Bolted to the structure, so the internal layout must be settled first. | $300–$900 |
| 4. Comfort | Carpet lining, fridge box, lighting, mud guards | Retrofittable any time. | $200–$900 |

What accessories do to your payload
This is where builds quietly go overweight. A drawer system is 30–50 kg empty. A set of jack legs is another 25–35 kg. Four full 20 L jerry cans is about 96 kg once you count the carriers. A full 9 kg gas bottle plus holder is around 23 kg.
It's entirely possible to add 250 kg in accessories without noticing — on top of the 300–450 kg a tray-and-canopy build already costs you. Anything you hang on the outside is floor space you get back, but it's also rearward, elevated mass. Budget it the same way you budget the canopy.
Common questions
What should I buy first for a new canopy?
An alarm and upgraded locks, then drawers and a shelf. Security protects everything you fit afterwards, and drawers and shelves set the internal geometry everything else has to work around.
Are canopy alarms actually worth it?
Yes, because most tool theft is opportunistic. An audible alarm changes the risk calculation for someone who wants to be away in ninety seconds. At $40.50 it's the cheapest meaningful security on the vehicle.
Will a suspended shelf fit any canopy?
Shelves mount to the canopy structure, so mounting method and internal width determine fit. Ours are 720 mm deep in 400, 530, 690 and 830 mm widths — measure internal width and clear height before ordering.
Can I fit accessories myself?
Most bolt-on items are DIY-friendly with basic tools. Drawer systems, ladders and roof racks are worth having fitted if you're not confident, because those mounting points carry real load.
Which parts wear out first?
Gas struts (2–5 years), door seals (3–6 years), lock barrels (3–7 years, sooner in coastal use) and tray side hinges. All are cheap and stocked at all three branches.
