Aluminium Ute Canopies in Australia: How to Choose, Size and Legally Load One in 2026
Author: EZ Toolbox Date Posted:16 September 2026
For a dual-cab tradie or tourer, the default is a 700–900 mm aluminium canopy on a dual-cab tray, with three-door access and a jack-off system so you can drop it in the driveway on a Saturday. Go to a 1000 mm or taller canopy only if you need to stand gear upright or fit a full 12V and fridge setup inside — the extra height costs payload and fuel. Expect roughly $1,170 for a small 500 mm canopy, $1,350–$2,000 for the common 700–900 mm sizes, and $2,799–$3,999 for a premium TIG-welded Xceed canopy. Full range: ETB Aluminium Ute Canopies.

Canopy, tub canopy, service body: three different vehicles
People use “canopy” for three quite different things. Getting the category right before you shop saves a lot of wasted quoting.
| Build type | What it is | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tub canopy | Sits in the factory tub — no tray conversion, no engineering. | Keeping the ute standard; cheapest entry to lockable storage. | Least usable volume; limited by the tub shape and wheel arches. |
| Hard lid | A lockable lid over the factory tub, no side walls. | Weather protection and basic security with almost no weight penalty. | No standing height, no side access. |
| Tray + canopy | The tub is removed and replaced with an aluminium tray; the canopy bolts to the tray. | The mainstream Australian tradie and tourer setup. Modular — the canopy can come off. | Costs more, adds mass, changes the vehicle permanently. |
| Chassis-mount / service body | A single integrated body bolted straight to the chassis — no separate tray. | Maximum internal volume, cleanest lines, professional fleet look. | Not removable; higher cost; needs correct mounting and compliance care. |
| Part-tray canopy | Canopy occupies part of the tray, leaving open deck behind it. | Carrying long or dirty loads on the deck while keeping tools locked. | Less enclosed volume than a full-tray canopy. |
Door configuration: the decision you live with every single day
Three-door (full side access)
Doors on both sides plus a rear door. You grab gear from whichever side is closest to the job, with no walking around the vehicle and no climbing. This is the tradie default for good reason — across a working year it saves real hours. Our Gen 2 rear-frame three-door canopies run up to 1800 mm.
Gullwing
Gas-strut doors that lift upward rather than swinging out. Two advantages: you can open them in a tight car park or between two vehicles on site, and the open door becomes a rain shelter while you work. The trade-off is overhead clearance — check your garage, and check the branches on your regular tracks.
Jack-off (the one people underestimate)
A jack-off canopy has four legs that let you lift the canopy off the tray and leave it standing in the driveway. It matters more than it sounds:
- You get a flat tray back for the weekend — green waste, a trailer load of mulch, a dirt bike — without giving up your fit-out.
- You can leave a fully loaded camp setup assembled at a base camp and drive the ute out for day trips.
- You can service the tray, the fuel tank or the rear suspension without stripping the build.
- At trade-in you can sell the canopy separately from the vehicle, which usually returns more than leaving it bolted on.
We sell the hardware separately as well: a set of four canopy jack legs at $550 and jack-off canopy clamps from $200 for a set of four. If you think there is any chance you will want the tray back, buy jack-off from day one — retrofitting is more expensive than specifying it.
Sizing: length, height and the hidden cost of 100 mm
Length follows your cab
| Cab type | Typical tray length | Common canopy length | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dual cab | 1600 – 1850 mm | 1400 – 1800 mm | Dual Cab Canopies |
| Extra cab | 2100 – 2150 mm | 1800 – 2100 mm | Extra Cab Canopies |
| Single cab | 2400 – 2450 mm | 1800 – 2400 mm | Single Cab Canopies |
| LandCruiser 79 | Genuine Toyota tray | 1600 mm purpose-built | LC79 Genuine Tray Canopies |
| RAM / Silverado / F-Series | Custom | American Heavy Duty Series | Tray & Canopy |
Height is where the money and the mass go
Standard canopies are 850 mm high. The 1000 mm high range adds usable standing space for shelving, a fridge slide and a full 12V fit-out; Xceed goes higher again. Each step up costs you three things: purchase price (roughly $300–$500 per 150 mm), mass out of your payload, and frontal area — which shows up as fuel burn on every highway kilometre for the life of the vehicle.
Practical test: stand in your driveway and hold a tape at 850 mm above your tray deck. If everything you need to carry fits under that line lying down, you do not need the taller canopy. If you are carrying a 60 L fridge, a slide, a pantry and a shelf above it, you do.
Construction: what to actually inspect
- Frame, not just sheet. A canopy carries its load through its frame. We use a unistrut framework with corner reinforcement; the Xceed range is 100% TIG-welded with a unistrut integrated floor system, so you mount shelves and drawers without drilling holes in the floor.
- Corner reinforcement. Corners are where canopies fail on corrugations. Look at them before you look at the paint.
- Door seals and drainage. Dust on the Oodnadatta Track finds any gap. Ask how the doors seal and where water drains.
- Hardware. Stainless handles, locks and hinges. Gas struts are consumables — check they are a standard replaceable size.
- Mounting. How the canopy attaches to the tray determines whether it stays square after two years of corrugations.
The legal bit: what a canopy does to your GVM
This is the section most canopy articles skip, and it is the one that costs people money.
A tub canopy adds roughly 120 kg. A full tray-plus-canopy build commonly adds 300–450 kg, and every one of those kilos comes out of your legal payload before you have put a single tool in it. On a dual-cab with a factory payload around 900–1,000 kg, that can be close to half your allowance gone on the hardware alone.
- Find your GVM and tare. GVM is on the compliance plate. Tare, under the Australian Design Rules, assumes only 10 litres of fuel, no occupants and no accessories — so it flatters reality.
- Weigh the vehicle as you actually use it. A public weighbridge, full tank, normal crew, normal load. This is the only honest number. Do it once and write it on the inside of the canopy door.
- Check axle loads, not just the total. You can be under GVM and still over the rear axle limit if all the weight sits behind the rear wheels. A canopy full of water, tools and a fridge is a long way back.
- Consider a GVM upgrade if the numbers do not work. Note that 4.5 tonnes GVM is the legal threshold between light and heavy vehicle in Australia — crossing it changes your licensing and compliance obligations.

The insurance trap. Going over GVM is not just a fine and a defect notice. If you have an at-fault accident while overloaded, an insurer has a clean reason to reduce or decline the claim — and so does the other party’s insurer. Weigh the ute. It costs about the price of a coffee at most public weighbridges.
What ute canopies cost in Australia in 2026
Prices are GST inclusive, supply only, and current at the time of writing. Fitting, accessories and 12V fit-out are additional.

Afterpay and zipPay are available at checkout; Shift and Humm90 cover larger business purchases. For a tradie kitting out a vehicle before the first invoice lands, spreading a $6,000 build is often the difference between doing it now and doing it next year.
Fitting out the inside — do this before you buy, not after
An empty canopy is a large, expensive box in which everything slides to the back. The fit-out is what makes it work, and planning it first often changes which canopy you buy.
- Shelving. A canopy suspended shelf from $269 doubles your usable height without touching the floor. Available 400–830 mm wide.
- Drawers. Toolbox drawers from $405 bring heavy gear out to you rather than making you climb in.
- Fridge and pantry. A fridge box with slide for an 85 L Bushman runs $540; pantry slides keep dry food accessible.
- Power. A 12V system is what turns a canopy into a mobile workshop or a touring rig. Plan the battery location before the shelves go in — batteries are heavy and belong low and forward.
- External carriers. Spare wheel carrier $76.50, jerry can holders from $80, gas bottle holders from $135, roof racks and a rear ladder from $315 to reach them.
- Lining. Marine canopy carpet at $67.50 cuts noise and stops steel tools chewing the alloy.
- Security. A canopy alarm from $40.50, plus upgraded locks.
Canopies by vehicle: what Australians are actually fitting
| Vehicle | Typical build | Notes for this vehicle |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota HiLux N80 / N90 | Dual-cab tray + 700–900 mm canopy | Payload is tight on higher trims — weigh before you add water tanks |
| Ford Ranger PX / Next Gen | Dual-cab tray + 3-door canopy | Wide tub means a tray conversion gains real usable width |
| Ford Ranger Super Duty | Heavy-duty tray + canopy or service body | Higher GVM makes a full fit-out far easier to keep legal |
| Isuzu D-MAX / Mazda BT-50 | Tray + 850 mm or 1 m high canopy | Popular touring platform; plan the 12V early |
| Mitsubishi Triton / Nissan Navara | Tray + 600–800 mm canopy | Watch payload; keep the canopy short and forward |
| VW Amarok | Tray + canopy, often jack-off | Owners frequently want the tray back at weekends |
| Toyota LandCruiser 79 | Genuine tray + purpose-built LC79 canopy | Single and dual cab; see the LC79 range |
| RAM 1500 / 2500 | American Heavy Duty Series | Big deck, big payload, big canopy |
Buying locally: three showrooms, national delivery
A canopy is a high-consideration purchase that photographs poorly. Standing next to one — opening the doors, feeling the hinge, looking at the corner welds — answers questions a product page cannot.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a ute canopy weigh?
An aluminium canopy alone typically runs 90–170 kg depending on length, height and door configuration. A complete tray-plus-canopy build commonly adds 300–450 kg to the vehicle. Ask for the specific shipped weight if your payload is tight.
Do I need engineering approval to fit a canopy?
A canopy fitted to a compliant tray on a standard vehicle generally does not require individual approval, but the completed vehicle must still comply with mass limits and load restraint requirements. A chassis-mount body or a GVM upgrade is a different conversation — talk to us and to your state roads authority before you commit.
Three-door or gullwing — which is better?
Three-door gives the fastest all-round access and is the tradie favourite. Gullwing is better where side clearance is limited and gives you a rain shelter while you work. If you park in tight metro spots daily, gullwing; if you work from open sites, three-door.
Can I take the canopy off myself?
With a jack-off system, yes — four legs, a clear driveway and about fifteen minutes. Without one, you need two to four people or an engine hoist. This is the single most common retrofit regret.
Will a canopy fit my ute without a tray?
Not a tray canopy. For a factory tub you want a tub canopy or a hard lid instead. If you want the volume and access of a proper canopy, the tray conversion is the honest answer.
What height canopy should I get?
Standard 850 mm suits most trade fit-outs. Choose 1000 mm or taller if you are running a fridge on a slide with shelving above it, or if you want to reach into the canopy without crouching. Every extra 100 mm costs price, mass and highway fuel.
Black or raw aluminium?
Black powder coat looks sharper and typically adds 10–20%. Raw is cheaper, cannot chip, and is easier to repair. Coastal owners should note that powder coat over aluminium is cosmetic, not structural protection — the aluminium was already fine.
How does a canopy affect fuel consumption?
Expect a measurable increase, driven mostly by frontal area and height rather than weight, and most noticeable above 90 km/h. A taller canopy on a highway-heavy vehicle is a real running cost, not a rounding error.
Can I get a canopy and tray as a package?
Yes, and it is usually cheaper and better-fitting than buying separately. We list packages from $4,999, the Tradesman 3-door from $5,199, modular tray and canopy from $6,499 and service bodies from $6,799 — see Tray & Canopy.
Do canopies leak?
A well-sealed canopy is weatherproof but not pressure-sealed — sustained corrugations and fine bulldust are the real test. Check door seals annually, keep drainage points clear, and use a dust-sealed fridge slide compartment if you tour the centre.
Key takeaways
- Pick the build type first — tub canopy, tray-plus-canopy or chassis-mount service body are three different vehicles, not three prices.
- Three-door access is what most owners wish they had bought; jack-off is what most owners wish they had specified.
- Height is the expensive dimension. Buy the height you need, not the height in the photo.
- A full tray-and-canopy build costs you 300–450 kg of legal payload before you load a single tool. Weigh the vehicle.
- Plan the fit-out — shelves, drawers, fridge, 12V — before you choose the shell. It often changes the answer.
- Buy from a local manufacturer with showrooms and spares. Seals, struts and lock barrels are the parts that decide year three.
