Australian ute storage has settled into a fairly standard vocabulary. Knowing the names saves you a lot of time when you compare listings, because two sellers will describe the same box three different ways. Here is the plain-English version, with the matching category page for each style.

Full door or half door? The question people get wrong

A full door gives you a clean, uninterrupted view of the whole box. That is genuinely faster to work out of — you are not lifting one thing to find another. The trade-off is that anything loose can roll out when you open the door on a cross-slope, which on a construction site or a paddock is most of the time.

A half door leaves a lip at the bottom, so loose stock stays put. If you carry a lot of small, round or heavy items — fittings, cable rolls, gas bottles, chemicals — the half door is the safer choice. Aluminium vs steel: the payload argument that ends the debate

Steel toolboxes are cheaper per box and easy to repair with a stick welder. That is the whole case for them. Against that, aluminium wins on the two things that matter most to an Australian ute owner: corrosion and mass.

Corrosion first. Aluminium forms its own oxide layer, so it does not need paint to survive. On a coastal run — Gold Coast, Newcastle, Mandurah, anywhere within cooee of salt air — a painted steel box will start bubbling at every drilled hole and weld within a few seasons. An aluminium box goes grey and keeps working.

Mass is the bigger one, because it is a legal issue, not just a comfort issue. Industry figures put a fitted dual-cab steel tray at roughly 250–380 kg, with the aluminium equivalent at roughly 100–180 kg. The same ratio applies to toolboxes. Swap 120 kg of steel boxes for 65 kg of aluminium boxes and you have just bought yourself 55 kg of legal payload for free — a bag of cement and a bit of change.

Checker plate or flat plate?

Functionally, very little separates them. The raised tread on checker plate adds a little stiffness and hides scuffs and grime, which is why it has been the work-ute default for thirty years. Flat plate wipes down in one pass, photographs better, and is the right base if you are wrapping the vehicle or applying business signage — which for a small trade business is free advertising on every job.

One thing worth knowing when you compare sellers: thickness claims on checker plate are not always measured the same way. The honest measurement excludes the raised tread and reads the thinnest part of the sheet. A box advertised as “2.5 mm checker plate” can be under 2.0 mm of actual material. When you are comparing two quotes, ask each seller which number they are quoting. Industry norms sit around 1.2–1.5 mm for small under-tray boxes and 1.5–2.0 mm for large boxes and canopies.

How to size a ute toolbox properly (the five-minute version)

Most returns and most regrets come from one mistake: buying to the outside dimension and discovering the inside will not take the item you bought the box for. Work through these five steps with a tape measure before you order.

1. Measure your tray deck, not your ute. Note the usable length between the headboard and the tailgate, and the clear width between the drop sides. Dual-cab trays commonly run 1600–1850 mm long; extra-cab and single-cab trays run 2100–2450 mm.
2. Measure your longest item. A 1.8 m level, a stock length of conduit, a broom, a shovel, an oxy set. That item sets your minimum internal length — not your average tool.
3. Subtract the frame. Internal length on a welded box is typically 30–60 mm less than the quoted external length, and internal height is reduced by the floor and lid sections. Ask for internal dimensions if they are not listed.
4. Check door swing. A full-height side door needs clear air beside the ute. In a standard 2.4 m wide garage or a tight CBD loading bay, a gullwing lift or a top-open lid is the only style that works.
5. Check under-tray clearance. Under-tray boxes have to clear the chassis rail, the fuel tank, the exhaust and the rear wheel arc at full suspension travel. Measure at full droop, not at ride height.

What aluminium ute toolboxes cost in Australia in 2026

Staying legal: payload, load restraint and the numbers police actually check

A toolbox is not a modification that needs engineering approval, but what you put in it can very easily put you over your limits. Three numbers matter.

GVM and payload

Your Gross Vehicle Mass is the maximum legal loaded weight of the vehicle. Payload is GVM minus tare. Under the Australian Design Rules, tare is measured with fluids topped up but only 10 litres of fuel, no occupants and no accessories — which is why the brochure payload figure always flatters the real world. Kerb mass, with a full tank, is the honest starting point.

Exceeding GVM risks fines, a defect notice and, in a serious incident, an insurer declining the claim. The only way to know your real number is to run the ute over a public weighbridge loaded the way you load it on a normal Tuesday. Load restraint

A locked toolbox is not automatically a restrained load. Heavy items inside a box still need to be prevented from moving, and the box itself has to be mounted so it cannot shift under braking. Axle loads and where you mount the weight

Two full toolboxes hung off the rear overhang behave very differently from the same mass sitting over the axle. Mount heavy, rarely-used gear as far forward as the tray allows, and keep the daily-use light gear at the back where you can reach it. Security: what actually stops tool theft

Tool theft is the single biggest unbudgeted cost in a small trade business, and a standard T-handle is a two-minute problem for anyone who has done it before. A realistic layered approach:
